Östersund’s Local Christmas Trees: A Festive Collaboration

Destination Östersund Focuses on Locally Produced Christmas Trees in Collaboration with JämtSkog UF

Today marks the beginning of this year’s Christmas tree installation in Östersund’s city center and Lillänge. A total of 180 trees will spread holiday cheer throughout November and December. What’s new this year is that Destination Östersund has chosen to collaborate with a local Young Enterprise company, JämtSkog UF – an initiative that gives both sustainability and local pride a prominent role in this year’s decorations.

Local Sustainability and Community Pride

Previously, industrially grown trees were purchased, but this year all trees will come from Jämtland forests. JämtSkog UF has signed agreements with local forest owners and is responsible for the entire process: from tree cutting to installation and removal after the holiday season. The result will be locally produced trees that have grown in their own forests.

Simultaneously, work is ongoing for this year’s winter lighting in collaboration with Jämtkraft. Together, these efforts will create a warm and welcoming holiday atmosphere in Östersund.

Unique Business Opportunity

JämtSkog UF will also deliver trees to the Biathlon World Cup organization – a project that has led them to focus on larger assignments instead of private sales, which was their original plan.

”It feels absolutely wonderful to decorate Östersund with locally produced trees that have grown in our own forests, while also giving young entrepreneurs the opportunity to drive a genuine and comprehensive project. This is exactly the kind of local engagement we want to highlight,” says Bea Olsson, project manager at Destination Östersund.

”For us, this is a dream assignment. Our original plan was to sell Christmas trees with home delivery, but when the opportunity came to collaborate with Destination Östersund, the project quickly grew. We work closely with local forest owners and do everything ourselves – from logging and installation. This collaboration provides us with invaluable experience in everything from planning to marketing and economics,” explains Jakob Rhensbo, sales representative at JämtSkog UF.

In addition to decorating the city center and Lillänge, individual businesses also have the option to purchase trees to place in front of their own establishments.
