Christmas Events in Skövde Attract Thousands of Visitors
During the first two weekends of December, Skövde Citysamverkan and Next Skövde organized three events that collectively attracted several thousand visitors to the city center.
City of Light: A Magical Start to the Holiday Season
The ”City of Light” event, held on the last Friday of November, has become a favorite among both younger and older visitors. Approximately 2,000 visitors gathered to watch the Light Fairy illuminate Skövde’s Christmas lights using a magical incantation.
”What’s especially wonderful about City of Light is that several actors work together. The municipality and property owners provide light installations, Kultur i Skövde arranges an annual fire show, and Skövde Energi and Rapp Fastigheter offer glögg and snacks to all visitors. They even distribute flashlights to all dressed-up children. It’s an event that truly spreads light and warmth in the dark November,” says Katarina Blad, Event Manager at Next Skövde.
Record-Breaking Christmas Market
The two December holiday activities attracted over 8,000 visitors to the city. This year set a record for the number of market stalls and food trucks, with nearly 50 vendors offering everything from waffles and candy to interior design, clothing, jewelry, and books. The market area was also expanded to include Helensparken, featuring young entrepreneur companies and cultural activities.
”It feels fantastic that the Christmas market attracts so many visitors to the city. This absolutely benefits local commerce, and we’re happy that a Christmas market is organized in the town square. Christmas shopping is crucial for city center stores, and I want to encourage Skövde residents to buy their Christmas gifts locally – this benefits not just the city center but the entire city,” says Martin Ekström, Chairman of Skövde City Association.
10,000 Visitors Celebrate Christmas in Skövde
The first Advent celebration on the town square featured Santa Claus, pony rides, marshmallow roasting, candle and calendar sales by Scouts, and a live nativity scene by Elimkyrkan.
”The city center depends on visitors who shop in our stores, get haircuts at our salons, visit our restaurants and cafés, play in our playgrounds, or hang out with a coffee in the square. Attracting 10,000 visitors during our Christmas events is extremely positive, and it’s wonderful that Skövde residents appreciate the activities we organize in the city center,” says Emma Edqvist, Destination Developer at Next Skövde/Skövde Citysamverkan.
