Swedish Handball Team to Face Brazil in Jönköping

In January 2026, Sweden will host the Handball European Championship on home soil – and the preparation will also take place on Swedish ground. The national team will play two international matches against Brazil, first in Jönköping on January 5th and then in Partille on January 7th.

Preparation for European Championship

National team coach Michael Apelgren stated, ”We have fantastic conditions for January to become an amazing month for us.”

For the seventh time in ten years, the Swedish men’s team will prepare for the championship by playing an international match in Jönköping. The Hallbybollen event, with hundreds of teams and thousands of participants, will create an incredible atmosphere.

Match Details

The teams will first meet on January 5th at Husqvarna Garden in Jönköping, and then on January 7th in Partille Arena for the European Championship dress rehearsal.

”Playing a championship on home ground is a dream I’ve long had, and I hope I get that opportunity in January,” says Sebastian Karlsson, right wing player currently with Paris Saint-Germain.

Historical Matchup

Sweden and Brazil have met twelve times historically, with Sweden winning nine of those matches. Brazil’s most recent significant achievement was reaching the quarterfinals in the World Championship for the first time, defeating Sweden, Norway, and Spain.

Local Perspectives

”It will be a beautiful start to the year to welcome the national handball team to Jönköping, where all Hallbybollen participants can see their idols live,” says Caroline Törnblad, Event & Destination Development Manager at Destination Jönköping.

Ticket Information

Tickets for the matches between Sweden and Brazil will go on sale on September 26th. More information about the 2026 European Championship can be found on the official handball team website.
