The Comeback of Sweden’s Oldest Knight Society: Conquering Kalmar Castle
From September 12-14, the meadows surrounding Kalmar Castle will be filled with brave knights on magnificent horses. The second edition of ”Tournament at Kalmar Castle” is set to be even bigger, offering activities for both adults and children.
Tournament Highlights
Sweden’s most recognized knight society, Torneamentum, will be present, delivering four tournament shows during the weekend, including two spectacular fire shows.
”The tickets for last year’s tournament shows were quickly sold out, with the fire show being especially popular. We are very happy to offer an extra fire show this year and have the opportunity to accommodate a larger audience,” says Johanna Algotson, event manager at Kalmar Castle.
Historical Background
Tournaments originated in the medieval period as an opportunity for knights to train and showcase their horse-riding and lance-handling skills. At Kalmar Castle, tournaments are said to have been held as early as 1276, during Magnus Ladulås’s wedding.

The castle will host a historically authentic medieval market with free entry on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can explore:
- Historical crafts

- Handmade jewelry
- Traditional food
Family-Friendly Entertainment

We’ll also have Calmar Renaissance Guild showcasing their beautiful costumes and organizing some children’s activities, and the medieval band Falsobordone will elevate the atmosphere with historical live music,” explains Johanna Algotson.
