Digital Heritage Revival: Southeast’s Hidden History

Digitalization Highlights Hidden Cultural Heritage – New Collaboration Project Starts in 2026

Digitalization Reveals Hidden Cultural Heritage – New Collaborative Project Starts in 2026

In January 2026, an innovative project will begin to bring the cultural heritage of the southeast region to life. The Digital Cultural Heritage Southeast project will run for three years and will highlight unique historical environments using exciting digital solutions. The focus will be on Kalmar Castle, medieval Kalmar, and the World Heritage Site of Karlskrona Naval City.

Project Overview

The initiative and application have been jointly driven by Kalmar Castle, Kalmar Municipality, and Karlskrona Municipality. The project is a broad collaboration where all participating parties are equal and contribute to the overall goal.

Project Details

  • Total Budget: Approximately 9.7 million Swedish kronor
  • Funded by: Growth Agency, Region Kalmar, and Region Blekinge
  • Primary Goal: Develop digital solutions to make history more accessible and engaging

Key Quotes

”Kalmar Castle has changed many times during its more than 800 years. With digital solutions, we can highlight even hidden parts of the castle’s history that have disappeared through the centuries. I am incredibly glad about this investment, which strengthens our historical visitor destinations through care, preservation, and knowledge,” says Meg Nömgård, Castle Manager at Kalmar Castle.

”This is a fantastic opportunity to develop new solutions that enable people to visually connect with Karlskrona environments from the past. Our World Heritage site is living, and the city has changed shape many times, so this is another opportunity to bring forth environments that may no longer exist in their original form,” says Per Gjörloff, Head of Culture and Leisure Administration, Karlskrona Municipality.

Project Impact

The project will not only contribute to new solutions and help communicate history in innovative ways but will also:

  • Strengthen digital competence
  • Create new working methods
  • Build a platform for collaboration and learning across regional boundaries

Participating Parties

The project involves Kalmar Castle, Culture and Leisure Administrations of Karlskrona and Kalmar Municipalities, Blekinge Technical University, Linnaeus University, and Blekinge Museum.

The results will be spread both regionally and nationally, contributing to a more inclusive and innovative cultural heritage approach. It represents a significant step towards making cultural heritage more alive and accessible to more people.
